CB400F street cafe racer, stock to touring to Rickman JPS special, to my final build of this bike.

I bought this in 1975 in the UK, shipped to South Africa in 1979, this CB400F has been through a few rebuilds and various different styles. Now, I think this is going to be the last one! Probably.

The rebuild has started.

Powder coated the frame and started to put the bike back together, at the same time replacing certain parts for some of my machined items. I was going to use a set of NOS Koni shocks that I have had since the early 80's. well these ended up on the Yoshi racer.  The wheels I have had since the late 70's and are from a company called Melba in Italy.

So Far...!

It has my TTR swingarm, the TTR lower triple tree that I polished, A set of TTR rear sets. I was going to have the repro side covers sprayed to match my original black and gold tank paint job. Changed my mind and decided to use the carbon fiber ones to match the carbon front fender and carbon air box.

The Motor..............

Specs:

* Yoshimura 54.5mm pistons (466cc)

* Web camshaft (fast road). DID race cam chain.

* Stock balanced rods and crank.

* Ported cyl head with stock size valves, Kibblewhite valve springs. Ceramic coated combustion chambers and the exterior has a special coating to aid cooling.

* Barnett clutch with a stock but undercut gear-box.

* Modified Stock carbs.

Yoshimura piston kit 9.6:1 Very nice kit.

I'm running the Dyna S with the Dyna 3 Ohm coils. All the stock Honda parts were replaced with new items including the primary chain and main and big end bearings.

The piston kit in the photo is the only kit available from Yoshimura. It is available from the 400fourstore in the USA.

It's coming together nicely.

Crankcases Have been painted and baked with a gloss black auto type paint. (very hard). Case are polished. notice the TTR points and alternator covers. The cyl is a bead blasted finish.

What Next......

Drilled stock brake disc. with a rebuilt and ceraminc coated calliper. Fork lowers are polished.

TTR 33mm head lamp brackets and the indicators are fitted to the short CB750 stems.

Fork internals are stock CB400F except for 15 weight Ohlins fork oil and the fitment of the TTR pre-load adjusters.

400fourstore oil cooler kit.

These are now available as a complete kit designed for the CB400F.

The Controls.

Just about every bike i have has got clip-on bars so this time i am fitting the stock UK spec bars with NOS switches and mounted to a polished stock upper triple tree. The top triple nut is an alloy TTR part.

Chrome clock covers and a chrome dash panel gives it the finishing touch.

Rear Shocks.

What you see here are the full spec units from Ohlins.  They feature adjustable length, adjustable compression and rebound damping. Pre-load is set via a hydraulic adjuster.

I had to do some changes to the mounts on the swingarm, so that's at the powder coater and will be the next part to be fitted.

What have i forgotten ?

Oh Yes the exhaust is a unit made by S&S performance in the 70's, It was a bit damaged from a crash i had back in the early 80's. I managed to repair the dents but couldn't get the pitting out from the top of the header, but with the ceramic coating it didn't come out to bad.  The silencer is a bit worse for wear, still deciding on that.

Next major part to do is the seat unit.......I have been undecided on this for months.  I am now going for the 70's Rickman unit that I have had tucked away for years, it's a bit damaged so I'll have a mold made up and make a new one.  Now the question is carbon or glass????

Jan 2009, nearly finished.

Well all I have left to do is to fit the silencer.

 I have changed my plans for this build and decided to fit the OEM seat with the stock swingarm, so I have at least one bike that I can take a passenger on.

New photos coming shortly.
